8:30 AM
Please specify hotel at time of purchase. We pick up in New Orleans at any hotel, Bed & Breakfast or select Airbnbs, uptown (close to St. Charles Ave.), in (or close to) the French Quarter, and on the Westbank. We do not pick up by the airport, in New Orleans East, in Slidell, or on the North Shore. Supplier will contact you the day before your tour to give you an exact pick up time.
Your historic plantation tour begins with morning pickup from your downtown New Orleans hotel. Once aboard the tour van, settle into a comfortable seat for the ride along the shoreline of Lake Ponchartrain and Great River Road en route to Destrehan Plantation.

At Destrehan Plantation, the oldest documented plantation home in the Mississippi Valley, a costumed guide leads you through the restored antebellum mansion. Hear stories of the estate’s former owners and slaves, and explore a separate exhibit dedicated to the 1811 slave revolt, before taking a self‐guided tour through vibrant gardens and down oak‐lined paths.

Then, travel to Houmas House and immerse yourself in the story and splendor of the old South as you tour its lavish and traditionally decorated rooms, speckled with artwork and antiques. Indulge in a gourmet, unlimited buffet lunch and relax on the grounds of the famed plantation. After lunch, follow your guide and hear the architectural history of the home and see the room where Bette Davis stayed while filming the 1963 movie Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.

Your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Great Experience! Rene (Guide) was very knowledgeable about NO/LA and its history, that it kept us engaged and wanting to see and learn more. The Plantations and Lunch Tour along with all the info was definitely worth our Time!

Wonderful tour of two plantations, with local guides at each location. Lunch was buffet style and delicious. Our guide Ellen provided a lot of history of New Orleans and the area. Isabella provided excellent service before the tour. Cannot say enough good about our experience.

Relaxing day out of the city

The tour guide was a cheerful lady full of Louisiana facts. Houmas House was lovely. The guide there knew his stuff and the gardens were great. The food was a buffet there in a cafeteria and it was fine, not amazing. Destrehan isn't really worth it. The guide was very nice but mostly inarticulate, so I didn't learn much. I'd recommend doing a tour to Houmas and maybe some other plantation, instead. Still, it was a relaxing day out of the city.

Destrehan was just alright but Houmas was great. Renee shared a lot of interesting things with us while getting to the tours. Food was nothing to write home about. Houmas tour guide even let my son play the piano. I’d definitely recommend Houmas and Isabelle tours

Stephen, with Isabella Tours, was an awesome guide. He was engaging and very knowledgeable about NOLA, Louisiana, and each of the plantations we visited. There was a scheduled mixup at one of the plantations and he proactively took care of his group to keep us on schedule. Would recommend this tour, especially if Stephen is the guide.

Driver did not know how to STOP Talking
Tony_S
, Mar 2022
The food was a bit disappointing for the price, the plantation guides were great, but... Our bus driver/tour guide would not stop talking the whole way there, in between plantations, and the whole way back. Not for a pause or a second; just yak, yak, yak.. her experiences, her history, things she had done, a sort of one-sided conversation with the guy near her (passenger) where she had been, on and on. At one point we were on a road above some marshy land and bayous, and it was pouring rain, so hard that you could not see three feet in front of the van...fog, slushy rain; really slippery dangerous conditions. Our driver kept right on talking and driving, using hand gestures, and she had about 9-10 people in her charge, depending on her to get us there safely! She couldn't see any better than we could, with all the pouring rain and wind and fog- it was a real mess to drive in and yet, she just cheerfully kept on talking while driving! I was truly terrified that we were going to slide off the road into the marshy water! I wanted to yell at her to shut up and pay attention to the road, but my husband persuaded me not to do that, as it might startle her, and cause her to jerk the wheel and put us into the water for sure. On the way way back, the rain had stopped (thankfully) and most people around us were napping or trying to nap, and yet, she seemed oblivious, just talk , talk, talk.

I am so glad you enjoyed the guides at the plantations, but I’m sorry you thought our Driver-Guide talked too much. We just have so much history and culture to share with our visitors! Most people really enjoy our guides’ narration as you can see by the vast majority of reviews here and elsewhere! We actually have an impeccable company driving record, with no at fault accident in 43 years, and heavy rain is definitely part of subtropical conditions and occurs quite often in New Orleans! Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience. Isabelle C.

The experience and Giselle were very good. There were two babies in group and they made so much noise during tour we could not hear guide. I would limit the age of guests or put on their own tour.

Houmas House grounds are spectacular. Would have liked more focus on the slaves’ and free colored experience at both plantations. I wish the tour guide had provided some background information on the specific plantations on the tour but his knowledge of New Orleans was impressive.
icon Response from Host , May 2021
Good afternoon Trevor and thank you for your nice review. We are so glad you found the grounds at Houmas House 'spectacular' and our historian-guide knowledge of NOLA'impressive'. We do include in this tour the guided slave quarters' walking tour at Laura Plantation and that part does focus on slavery, but maybe you weren't able to do that part? On your next trip down to New Orleans, please come and visit Whitney Plantation and Museum of Slavery as that tour is entirely focused on that important but dark side of Plantations' history. Thanks again, Cordially, Isabelle C.

This is a nice tour, it takes you out of the city so you can see part of the country. The comparison between the two plantations is remarkable, especially Houmas House-really worth the visit. The hostess who guided us around the Houmas House was amazing.
