Laura Plantation provides a unique opportunity to learn about Louisiana’s Creole past, thanks to detailed surviving records kept by the family who lived here for four generations. The remarkably well-maintained estate is included on the National Register of Historic Places and the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. Make your own way to the plantation, located an easy 1-hour drive from New Orleans along the Great River Road that follows the Mississippi.

Once you arrive, follow a knowledgeable guide on a tour of the plantation’s furnished, 24,000-square-foot (7,315-square-meter) mansion, slave quarters, intricate gardens and sugar fields. Learn about the French-descended Duparc family who founded in the plantation in 1804. Much of what is known about the plantation’s inhabitants is gathered from the memoir of fourth-generation family member Laura Locoul, in addition to records discovered in the French National Archive.

The honest and informative tour takes a close look at the various personalities of the plantation owners, plus the unique influences of the Creole culture that thrived in Louisiana for more than 200 years. After your tour, you can continue exploring independently with a visit to other plantations along the Great River Road.

Great tour guide. Responsive to questions. Learning everyone's history is important. It leads to greater understanding and acceptance. You're not responsible for the past. Learn so that the future isn't repeated.

Point research to remaining descendants

Most memorable was the intertwining of the peoples lives and how the house was built. I think the connection to those still living is the only missing link. Whatever it would take to make that happened would be well worth the research and connects this story to today.

Our tour guide was excellent in giving information on the Creole Laura Plantation. The house reflects their bright colors and the history is very interesting. It rained during our tour, but that did not matter as we found shelter outside and waited it out. The home does not have an elevator for handicap. I highly recommend this as a great place to see and learn about the history and workings of the plantation.

Toured Laura Creole Plantation with my husband as Krysten as our guide. We have toured about 8 plantations and this one, we both agreed, was the best one we have ever taken! The plantation was not just shown to us, but was presented in the way the family lived there. She explained the time period, the culture, and the values of the family through interesting stories. It brought the home to life! We would highly recommend you to put this tour on your list!

Interesting Tour

I teach American history at a major university and have done a great deal of research on Laura Plantation, so I can say with knowledge that the tour content was historically accurate and very interesting. The tour guide was a bit arrogant, but she was also very entertaining and well-versed in her presentation. I was not expecting the tour to be predominantly outdoors, so be prepared to dress for walking and staying cool.

A Must See

The Laura Plantation was an incredible experience. Our tour guide, Renee, was very knowledgeable. By the time we left We felt we had a lot of knowledge about how the plantation began, was run, and a lot about the family. A special note of interest for me was the ancestors of the 4 children fathered by the middle son, while not acknowledged as family due to their mothers being slaves, have reunions on the plantation. Renee said their were up to 100 family members in attendance. Also take time to check out the little museum you just might find a famous musician or 2 came from families that lived on the plantation.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable she had a soft kind delivery of information. We appreciated hearing the true facts of slavery as much as people do not to hear this it is the truth. It would have been nice to hear or meet a descendent.
