This full-day tour begins from downtown Nashville.

Once in Franklin, visit those sites close to where the Union and Confederate armies fought during the Civil War. Hear stories from the knowledgeable guide about the Battle of Franklin, fought on November 30, 1864 and known by many as the five bloodiest hours of the Civil War.

Visit the Carter House, which served as the Federal headquarters during the battle, and the Lotz House, which became a makeshift field hospital after the war. Both places have been refurbished, but still show their battle scars from the war with bullet and cannonball holes as well as blood stained floors and walls. 

Then, spend time in the town of Franklin to shop, eat (own expense) and view some of its historic sites. From there, it’s off to the Carnton Plantation, a 48-acre farm which also served as a Confederate field hospital after the Battle of Franklin. A graveyard for the Confederate soldiers that perished remains — the largest private Confederate cemetery in the United States.

You will then journey to the Carnton Plantation, ordered to be a Confederate field hospital by a Southern General and then made an eternal memorial to the Confederate soldiers by the mistress of the house. Now, the plantation is home to the largest private Confederate cemetery in the US. Tour the plantation with your guide and hear narrative descriptions about that fateful battle and the aftermath of the war. After your tour, you’ll be taken back to your Nashville hotel.

Very interesting seeing two of the Civil War field hospital houses and getting the history of the civil war, people and house. The third house, Lutz, was mainly all about the family who fist lived there, I had to ask our tour guide at the end of the house tour why we had stopped there that’s when I found out like the other two homes it had also been used as a field hospital. But overall, all the local guides for the homes, especially the first two visited, where very knowledgeable and excited to talk about in the history of the civil war.

The Carnton House and Carter House tours were very interesting. The guides were very informative, and they were able to paint a clear picture of what it must have been like to be there during the battle. The town of Franklin is quite lovely with plenty of quaint shops and restaurants. Since the time allotted in the town of Franklin did not allow for both shopping and eating, I would have preferred to have spent more time in the town of Franklin rather than at the Lotz House. The Lotz House tour was more of a Lotz family history presentation rather than having to do with the Battle of Franklin. On our drive to the Houses, our bus driver educated us on the Battle of Franklin and the Civil War. On our return to the depot, he pointed out points of interests. I would recommend this tour.
