Visiting leh in winters sounds mesmerizing and then further driving 2 hrs to Chilling (yes it a place) and as the name suggests its extremely cold and also the starting point of the Chadar trek. Before the trek start one has to rest for atleast 2 days to acclimatise to the harsh weather conditions and the breathlessness due to oxygen shortage. And since travel by air is the only way to reach leh during winters one should be very particular to avoid physical exertion as it can lead to low BP, AMS, severe headache and breathlessness etc (two of our fellow trekkers were admitted to hospital for a couple of hours and then discharged). After acclimatising and getting your medical done on the 3rd day, leave for the trek and the real fun begins. Its a 6 day trek and you walk on the frozen river at all times. On the first day walking without slipping is a challenge but eventually you will get used to it. I suggest you carry your own backpack instead of paying extra to a porter for carrying your bag since it breaks your fall if you slip and you don't hurt yourself. You stay in a tent every night, some nights you have bonfire and dance (depends on the trekkers). The start of the day is very cold but after walking a few kilometres the body becomes warm. There is no sign of civilization on the entire trek except for the other bat hes of trekkers returning from the summit. For the first time in my life i witnessed continued snowfall for 72hrs. Always follow your trek leaders command and never miss the briefing. Be nice to the porters and the fellow trekkers, never wander near the no go area of the river as it might just sink in or the ice sheet might break. Don't litter during the trek and keep the zanskar clean. You come across a lot of frozen streams and waterfalls but the view of the mighty frozen Nerak water fall is amazing. Never smoke or booze during the trek coz if something goes wrong medically then the only option is that the porter carry you back or a air ambulance which will burn a big hole in your pocket and its availability also depends on weather and a lot of other factors. If possible tip the porters at the end of the trek as its their only source of income during winters and its a seasonal trek.
