Ol Pejeta Conservancy Tours

Once a colonial beef ranch, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy is now a leading wildlife sanctuary. Backdropped by Mount Kenya’s snowy peaks, the 90,000-acre (36,422-hectare) savanna preserve is home to several safari must-sees, including East Africa’s largest black rhino population and the last northern white rhinos in the world.
The Basics
It’s possible to spot all of Africa’s Big Five—plus endangered cheetahs, chimpanzees, and Grévy’s zebras—on a safari tour of Ol Pejeta. The preserve’s proximity to central Kenyan attractions such as Mount Kenya National Park makes it a convenient stop on a multi- or full-day tour, while its relative closeness to Nairobi means Ol Pejeta is accessible to time-pressed travelers interested in Africa’s wildlife heritage and ongoing conservation work.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a must for nature lovers.
- Some safari vehicles are wheelchair-accessible—check with your supplier.
- The conservancy is cashless, so entry, accommodation, and experiences must be booked in advance.
- Campsites and bed-and-breakfast accommodation are available on-site, as well as a daily program of activities such as horse rides, bush walks, and community visits.
How to Get There
Located on the equator in central Kenya’s Laikipia County, Ol Pejeta is a 3-to-4-hour drive from Nairobi. Matatus (public buses) depart for Nanyuki from Nairobi hourly, though private transfer is typically more time-efficient. Alternatively, take a 35-minute flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Nanyuki Airport, about a 45-minute drive from the conservancy.
When to Get There
The dry season (June through October) is generally considered the best time for wildlife watching in Kenya. However, risking the wet season can reward you with fewer crowds, baby animals, and rich vegetation—if you’re not rained out first.
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Though they’re not native to Kenya, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy has been taking in abused and orphaned chimpanzees since 1993, when a Burundi center was forced to close. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary houses two large groups of rehabilitated primates in sprawling natural enclosures— visit for free with your main-site entry ticket.
