The Basics

South Africa’s largest game reserve, Kruger National Park covers 7,700 square miles (19,485 square km). Many lodges within the park offer safari packages that include morning and afternoon game drives. If you are staying outside Kruger Park in Hazyview, Nelspruit, or White River, you can book a tour that includes an early morning, evening, or day-long game drive. From the full experience from Johannesburg, book a full-day group or private tour that runs up to 16 hours and includes about three hours of game viewing.

Wonderful experience!
This was a wonderful experience, right before everything closed because of the coronavirus. All of the guides were excellent and tried really hard to find animals. We had a private safari since most people had stopped traveling by then. The accommodations were very nice. The staff was great. Again, can’t say enough good things about the guides. We would highly recommend this once things return to normal.

I cannot say enough good things about this experience. Great price, food, animal sightings, and people. The rooms are nicer than you would expect and it is a great price for all that you get. I highly recommend.

Private 3 Day Kruger Park Safari from Johannesburg
It was one of the most spectacular experiences of my life, and it was thanks to the attention and service of our guides Lareto and Bruce, who made our trip perfect. We saw many animals and we were able to find the big 5, the accommodation in the camps and the food was amazing, Lareto and Bruce have very good knowledge of the area and where to see the best games, we are super grateful for everything and we recommend this tour 100% already that in three days we did and saw everything. Thanks again to Lareto and Bruce for everything and I hope you can share this experience with many people.

Guided Tour of Kruger

Private 3 Day Kruger Park Safari from Johannesburg
Our guide Melusi was terrific. He met us at our JoBurg airport hotel and drove us to Kruger, with lots of good info on the way. Once there, we drove around the park, spotting lots of animals. He took us to one of the camps where we stayed 2 nights. We went on a jeep game tour, and then Melusi took us on other trips. Great experience and at a good price. Thank you

5 Day Katekani Lodge Kruger National Park Safari
Staffs are very nice and professional. The annoying part is the frequent out of power, does not have wifi and phone communication with the staff in Katekani Tented Lodge.

4 Day Lodge and Treehouse Kruger National Park Safari
We stayed in Tremisana Lodge and Marc’s Treehouse. The accommodation is basic but an experience not to be missed - especially the tree house. The food in both locations was good. The bbq was impacted by the weather, but we still saw the Hyena by the camp fire. The game drives and bush walks (early starts) were very good. We managed to see 4 of the big 5 (no lions) over the 4 days. Took some great photos and met some very nice, interesting people also on the tour. The guides were great (particularly hakuna matata🤣 ) and obviously knew their stuff. The tour was well organised, everything ran to schedule, and very friendly staff took good care of us Tip - if you see something in Kruger that you want to buy, do it immediately - you don’t get a second chance! The only downside of the tour was the length of the drive to and from Jo’burg - although it was broken up by several stops - it takes the best part of 2 days.

3 Day Classic Kruger National Park Safari
Overall I give this safari package a 5 star rating. I was beyond what I could have ever imagined. Viva Safaris goes out of their way to give you the ultimate safari experience through sunrise, sunset and all day drives through the game parks. The personnel at the loge were exceptional, the food was great. The only negative item was that I was given the impression that on the day of arrival there would be time to relax, maybe take a dip in the pool before heading out on the sunset drive. The drive from Johannesburg took 8 hours including stops so we didn't arrive until 5:00 pm and the sunset drive was departing at 5:30 so there was barely enough time to put your bags in the room before activities begin. I would definitely do this safari again, although next time I would book either the 4 or 5 day instead of the 3 day.

Great Game Drives

5 Day Lodge and Treehouse Kruger National Park Safari
I will start with the negatives. The initial transfer for JNB is too rushed - we had barely ten minutes to change etc, after arriving at the lodge before going on the night drive. The room at the lodge had an air conditioner but no controller. The rushed nature of our arrival meant we did not spot this. The office was closed when we got back from the drive - so, I could not get one. The windows are not barred - against monkeys or netted against mosquitoes - so we spent a sleepless night in an "oven". Our tree house was not in a tree - very few of the rooms are. However, this is an advantage as the tree houses do not have en suite facilities but the other rooms do. Food was very good - with vegetarians catered for - but there was no choice. This was not a problem to us but could be if you are at all fussy about what you eat. That said, the trip was very enjoyable and represents good value for money. The guides (especially Tom) were very knowledgeable and all of the drives were excellent. We saw the big five - with seeing leopards on the night safari and the family of hyenas chilling out on their den the next day - probably the highlights!

Amazing 3 day Kruger Park Safari with Balanta Image Safaris

Private 3 Day Kruger Park Safari from Johannesburg
My husband and I traveled to South Africa for a Powerlifting meet in October 2019. After the meet we wanted to go on a short safari and were fortunate enough to find Balanta Imagine Safaris. We did the 3 days guided Kruger Park Safari from Johannesburg. Our guide Lerato was amazing from the moment we were picked up from the airport in Johannesburg. Lerato was very personable and knowledgeable about Kruger Park. Her knowledge of Kruger and her passion for her job were undeniable. We arrived in Kruger Park early afternoon on day 1 of our safari and had seen 4 of the big 5 by early evening. We saw the last of our big five the next morning when we spotted a leopard up in a tree. We were lucky that only the 2 of us were on the safari and we saw so many animals I lost count. I requested giraffes and zebras and Lerato came through with multiple sightings of both! We stayed at Berg En Dal rest camp within Kruger Park. Our cottage was simple, rustic, and clean and gave us the feeling of being on a safari. We loved everything about our safari from start to finish! We are hoping to return to South Africa next year and will book another safari with Balanta Imagine requesting Lerato to be our guide. If you are looking for a professional, organized and passionate company for a safari I highly recommend Balanta Imagine Safaris and Lerato as your guide.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Kruger National Park is during the dry season, between April and September. Temperatures are pleasant, vegetation is sparse, and water levels are low, which makes for the best game viewing. In the rainy season, October to March, thick foliage can make it harder to spot animals.

Spotting the Big Five in Kruger National Park

Catching sight of the Big Five is the highlight of any African safari. Lions tend to roam the open savannah and travel in prides of five to 15. They spend much of the day sleeping and get active in the later afternoon. Elephants are highly social and you can spot herds as large as 100 in Kruger, most often gathered around a watering hole. Buffalo may be the most dangerous of the Big Five and are also quite social, moving in herds of several hundred that often give rise to large dust clouds as they move in the dry season. Both white and black rhinos are endangered, so seeing them in Kruger is a rare treat. Leopards are the most elusive of the Big Five; you’re most likely to spot one perched on a large tree branch or preparing to stalk prey at night.
